Instead of giving something up during Lent, please consider giving something away each day.

A few years ago, Neighbors supporter Lisa Simplot participated in a “reverse calendar” donation drive. She shares her story with us as well as some tips for others who are interested in doing a similar drive for the upcoming season of Lent.

Why did you choose to participate in the reverse calendar donation campaign?

I saw the idea on social media and thought it was a simple and easy way to make a donation. Many of the items in need are around $1 each, so when you break it down like that, it’s easy and affordable. I was not patient enough to make a daily trip to the store, so I purchased all the items at once.

How was the experience?

It was an easy process. I just printed the list and headed to the store. All the items were pretty common, so they were easy to find. I found all except one item (or I may have purposely skipped an item since I am not a fan of canned cranberries!) Another idea is to grab a prepackaged donation bag – like at Knowlan’s – before you check out. This is super easy and can be done anytime of the year.

Were you surprised by any of the items on the reverse calendar donation list?

At the time I participated, none of the items were really a surprise as it was mainly food staples.

What would you say to others who are interested in doing their own reverse donation calendar to support Neighbors?

Instead of spending money on something for myself that I don’t need, I felt good about contributing towards those who do have a need. Even if you don’t want to or can’t do all the items, anything is appreciated. I have seen other similar campaigns to either “give one item away every day” or “give up an item a day to give to others” – I think it’s all about finding something that works for you and helps others as the same time.

All non-perishable donation items can be dropped off at Neighbors during business hours (M-F) and placed in the yellow donation bin located near the food shelf receiving door on the lower level of our building. Thank you.
