During the annual Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign, many of our church partners support Neighbors by organizing food and fund drives. We recently spoke with a representative from one of our long-standing church partners, Bethesda Lutheran Church in Inver Grove Heights, about their unique food and fund drive theme this year.

Question: How did you choose your theme of “Sweetness and Spice of Life”?

Jane M.: We are a small but mighty congregation and we thought it would be great to do something different than we had been doing – which was a quantity goal – so we are collecting ingredients used in cooking or baking as those items tend to be expensive and rarely on sale. The idea was to add ‘flavor’ to life. Some are choosing to provide recipes with the donated items. One example is a Snickerdoodle cookie recipe that is being provided with cinnamon. The recipes can be photo copied to be provided with multiple containers of each spice.

As usual, we have encouraged monetary contributions but people have said they think this is a fun, unique way to contribute! We are also providing colorful card stock so our Bethesda members can write notes to the families or working/volunteering with Neighbors.

We don’t have a specific goal, however, we are excited to see how our creative efforts develop during the month of March and, hopefully, throughout the year!
